  • December 22, 2017

On December 18th, 2017, not just the K-pop community was shocked by the sudden death of SHINee vocalist Kim Jonghyun. Having committed suicide by burning a charcoal briquette, the hospital failed to revive him. Fans were holding on to the likely 1% hope of him surviving but all hope was gone when his management SM Entertainment released their official statement.

He had left a suicide note for his sister and friend Nine who posted the suicide note on his Instagram after getting permission from Jonghyun’s family to do so.

His funeral and burial were held yesterday, December 21, 2017 led by his sister and SHINee co-member, Minho. The pallbearers were his co-members Onew, Key and Taemin joined by Super Junior’s Leeteuk, Donghae and Eunhyuk. Other SM Entertainment artists like Super Junior members, Girls’ Generation members including his close friend Taeyeon, Red Velvet’s Yeri even went upfront and cried and F(X)’s Krystal joined the funeral procession.

Other K-pop artists including BTS went to visit and pay their respect at his wake while some K-idols took to social media to express their condolences.

Though his death was so sudden that it took not just the K-pop community by surprise, this left us with the message that mental health is very important. Depression and other mental illnesses must not be taken for granted and must be given attention. Depression can occur to anyone, even celebrities which is why kindness should always be chosen because everyone is juggling their own problems and issues. Always lend people a helping hand, especially to those who are suffering. Help make life worth living for everyone.
